What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or periodontitis, is a serious oral health condition caused by infection and inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, it can damage the soft tissue and the bone supporting your teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss and other systemic health concerns.
We help patients in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, Soquel, and nearby communities prevent, detect, and manage gum disease through comprehensive care, regular checkups, and expert guidance on oral hygiene. Early intervention is key to maintaining healthy gums and protecting your long-term oral health.

Periodontal Care and Treatment
Our periodontal care begins with a comprehensive evaluation by board-certified periodontist, Dr. Abbas Doctor, who diagnoses gum disease and creates customized treatment plans based on each patient’s needs. Dr. Abbas carefully assesses the severity of periodontal conditions to determine the most effective course of care.
Treatment depends on the severity of your gum disease. Early-stage gum inflammation may only require deep cleanings and improved home care, while advanced periodontitis may need more intensive therapies.
During routine visits, our hygienists perform the periodontal treatment, including deep cleanings, to help control infection and promote gum healing. Using the clinical findings gathered by the hygiene team, Dr. Torres oversees care and designs a personalized treatment plan focused on restoring and maintaining long-term gum health.
In addition to in-office care, we provide lifestyle and home care guidance to reduce your risk of gum disease, including:
- Brushing twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush
- Using WaterPik to remove plaque between teeth and along the gumline
- Using antimicrobial mouthwash
- Reducing sugar and starch in your diet
- Quitting smoking to support gum and overall health
